Letter : typescript, 1802 Apr. 17, Philadelphia, [Pa., to Trustees of South Carolina College].

Responding to a letter from the Trustees of South Carolina College, 14 Apr. 1802, re the competition to design a college building to be erected in Columbia, S.C. Latrobe discusses his dislike of such contests, where the influence of gentleman amateurs lacking professional training, "have ... often made me repent that I have cultivated my profession in preference to my farm." Although Latrobe did not consider the $350 prize money ample compensation for his time required for a building design, he promises to send the trustees a simple sketch of his proposal and to be "very easy on the subject" of compensation.
